MMA News: Claressa Shields Set To Make MMA Debut, But Hasn’t Turned Her Back On Boxing For Good

When Claressa Shields won gold at back-to-back Olympic Games in London and Rio, there was no doubt that she was going to be a huge success when she turned professional. Shields is one of just eight fighters in the history of boxing to have held all major belts, but shocked all fans when she revealed that she would be entering the world of MMA.

However, there shouldn’t be much shock, as she has constantly been a fighter that is looking to break new ground, and she will be able to do just that in MMA.

    MMA News: Shields Wants History

Boxing may have lost one of its brightest stars in the short term, but Shields admitted that she has history on her mind when making the decision. She revealed that no fighter has ever held titles in both sports, and that is the goal that she will attempt to achieve after joining the Professional Fighters League. There have been a select number of athletes that have excelled in other sports, with Deion Sanders being one of the few that have played in the biggest games in both American Football and baseball.

There is no doubt that Shields has the potential to achieve anything that she puts her mind to, with Mark Taffet claiming that she is a ‘once in a lifetime athlete’. However, boxing fans should be too despondent, as she has already revealed that she plans to return to the boxing ring. That return could come in the form of a huge title fight against old amateur rival Savannah Marshall.

MMA News: Marshall One Of The Few Blotches On Shields Record

Shields has already revealed that she will look to set the record straight after her run in MMA, and is already targeting a rematch against Savannah Marshall. Marshall managed to beat Shields during their amateur days, and has been calling for a rematch for a number of years.

Marshall is the WBO middleweight champion, which could make for one of the biggest women’s fights in recent history should they meet at some point in the near future. Shields will likely look for that fight afterwards, as she is currently unbeaten in all ten professional fights. Her last win came earlier this year in January, as she beat Ivana Habazin by unanimous decision to win the WBO and WBC light middleweight titles.
