There was a shocking result in the boxing action on Saturday evening, as Josh Kelly’s perfect boxing record was ended at the hands of a brutal stoppage victory for David Avanesyan. It was a stunning display by the Russian underdog, but he was truly deserving of the victory, as he knocked down the British fighter on two separate occasions in the bout.
The victory meant that Kelly has now lost for a first time as a professional, and Avanesyan had successfully reclaimed his European Welterweight title in the process.
Boxing News: Dramatic End To Delayed Contest
The two fighters have been close to sealing a deal to fight on a number of occasions in the past, but the fights were always called off for one reason or another. However, Avanesyan made up for the delay from the very first bell, as he made the British challenger look overwhelmed with the pressure that he was putting him under. Kelly did land some promising shots of his own during the contest, but the battle was altered after a head injury saw blood pouring from Kelly.
Kelly continued to try and dictate the pace of the fight, but it always looked as though Avanesyan was biding his time and waiting for the perfect moment to pounce. That finally came in the sixth round, as Kelly was floored after a menacing number of shots were landed by the talented Russian fighter.
Boxing News: Corner Throws In The Towel
Kelly was able to make it make to his feet after that first knockdown, but the relief wouldn’t last long, as the Russian was back on him within seconds. Kelly’s corner ultimately had no other option but to throw in the towel, as the situation showed no signs of improving for Kelly despite his grit and resilience that were evident throughout the contest.
Questions will now revolve around what comes next for Kelly. His long-time British rival Conor Benn couldn’t help but deliver a parting comment from the commentary booth, as he questioned whether Kelly had the desire to compete with one of the most talented boxers in the division. It does seem that only time will tell, but it looks incredibly hard to believe that this was the final time that we would see the Brit in the ring.
