It looks to be a long road back to the top for Daniel Dubois, as the British heavyweight hopeful has still not been given the all-clear to return to the sport by doctors. The 23-year-old picked up a serious eye injury in his defeat to Joe Joyce late last year, which has left him speaking to specialists about what his plan could be moving forward.
Dubois has revealed that he is growing frustrated with the pace that the process is taking, as he wants to get back into the ring to show those that doubted him that he isn’t a ‘quitter’ and he remains a fighter that can go to the very top.
Boxing News: Elite Fighters Question His Mentality
It was a monumental evening for Dubois in November last year, as many expected it to be the night that he firmly arrived in the heavyweight title picture. However, it didn’t quite plan out the way that many believed, including Dubois. He was brutally knocked out by Joyce in the tenth round of the contest, which saw him lose the WBO international heavyweight title, as well as the Commonwealth, British and WBC Silver titles.
He recently claimed that he ‘panicked’ at the time, but former boxing greats have stated that they believed the fact that he ‘quit’ was more concerning than anything else. Among those that were critical of his finish in that fight were Matt Macklin and Carl Frampton, who both held coveted titles during their professional career.
Boxing News: Dubois Looking To Return
However, he is keen to get back into the ring as soon as he can to show that he is still a fighter than can perform at the highest level. There have been some changes behind the scenes, as former trainer Martin Bowers will no longer be part of his team, and he has instead enlisted the help of Mark and Jimmy Tibbs, who have been part of previous heavyweight hopefuls journey to the top.
Their most recent success story was with Dillian Whyte, who looks to regain his mandatory challenger status when he collides with Alexander Povetkin in March. Whyte lost the previous meeting between the heavyweights to lose the WBC interim title, but he will be heavily expected to return to winning ways at the SSE Arena on the 6th March and set up a massive fight for later in the year, which could come against Deontay Wilder.
