Vergil Ortiz Jr has revealed that he is open to stepping in the ring with Josh Kelly at some point in the future. There have been growing calls for a fight to be made between the two fighters, but Ortiz Jr has claimed that the fight could only realistically happen if Kelly overcomes the challenge that lies ahead of him this coming weekend against David Avanesyan.
A win for Kelly would be exciting for boxing fans, as it could potentially open the door for a massive welterweight bout between two of the best up-and-coming fighters in the division later in the year.
Boxing News: Tough Fight Ahead For Kelly
However, Kelly shouldn’t look past the challenge that he has this weekend, as he will be coming up against a fighter that previously challenged for the world title. He will need to take note from Josh Warrington’s loss last weekend, as the Brit seemed to look past his challenge with his sights set on a future showdown against a bigger star. There doesn’t seem to be much in the way of belief that Kelly is looking past Avanesyan though, as his threat is clear for all to see.
Kelly will be defending his perfect record this Saturday at the SSE Arena, and a date with Ortiz Jr could be on the cards if he picks up the win. There is no doubt that one, if not both, of the mentioned young fighters could be in line for a title opportunity in the near future.
Boxing News: Next Great Welterweights
Both Kelly and Ortiz Jr can claim to be the next star in the welterweight division judging by the professional records that they have achieved to this point. Kelly has continued to demonstrate why he is so highly regarded in the ring over recent years, as he has picked up huge wins against Przemylaw Runowski and Wiston Campos. However, he looks to show that he can successfully step up in quality this weekend with the European Welterweight title on the line.
Ortiz Jr has also been as dominant throughout his career to this point, as he has won all 16 of the fights that he has been involved in. His dominance has never even been questioned, as he has won all bouts by knockout. His last win came in July last year, as he finished Samuel Vargas in the seventh round to retain the WBA Gold title. However, like Kelly, he has a fight to plan for against Maurice Hooker before looking ahead to future plans.
