There was a time when the WWE had a tag team division that was second to none, and on This Day in Wrestling History they added a fun new team called The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers
The Rougeau Brothers (Jacques and Raymond Rougeau) made their debut by defeating the Moondogs (Moondog Rex and Moondog King) on Primetime Wrestling on February 28, 1986.
It marked the start of a fun run where they took their place as a great heel team.
While the Rougeau Brothers aren’t remembered as tag champions or one of the best around by many, they were a great team to watch and in they were mirror images of another great tag team.
They were similar to the Hart FoundatioTHe n in many ways, and possibly the most important was they shared one of the greatest managers in wrestling history — “The Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart.
Jimmy Hart was one of the most talented managers for a variety of reasons, but most of all he loved to give back.
From the Mouth
During an interview with Slam Wrestling in 2001, Jimmy Hart explained the similarities between the two teams as well as their work ethic and different styles.
Special thanks to @awrestlinghistorian for the excerpt and factoids.
“Everybody I’ve ever managed, I always feel like I owe something back to them because they helped me make a living back in the day.
“I had the Hart Foundation and the Rougeau Brothers, and both of them together were so different and so good. Both teams, Bret of course, when he got in the ring, he was just tremendous. And so was Jacques, had a lot of showmanship to him. Raymond was more wrestling-oriented, but Jacques had the personality, kind of the way Anvil had the personality for the Hart Foundation.
“They had heat, let me tell you. They had more heat than anybody in the territory back then. It was just tremendous … The U.S.A. – Canada thing never burns out. It’s just a natural.
“They were probably one of the best tag teams because they did everything behind the referee’s back. I’d call the referee’s attention, and when the referee was with me, they’d do the double kicks on the guys, do the double hip tosses together, they worked as a team really good.
“Always on time, dependable, if they needed a 20-minute match, they gave a 25-minute match, always kept their outfits updated.” – Jimmy Hart
Road Warrior Animal once said tag team wrestling was his favorite because so many stories can be told with the different personalities and skillsets of four people working together, and we agree.
It’s an artform that’s hard to explain or duplicate, and the Rougeau Brothers fit in perfectly and made This Day in Wrestling History one to remember.
