It has been a tough year or so for Dana White, but he has excelled at putting together huge nights of MMA action. However, one fight that all fans want to see involving the two best welterweights on the planet has been forced to be scrapped again.
The fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Leon Edwards was set to take place on the 13th March, but for the third time in two months it has needed to be scrapped. The announcement was certainly not something that fans wanted to hear heading into another action-packed weekend of UFC action, but there is set to be a new opponent picked to face Edwards.
UFC News: Planning Nightmare
The appetite is certainly still there to see the two men square off inside the octagon, but the recent announcement would be another kick in the teeth for fans. The two stars were first scheduled to fight in December, but the date was pushed back after Edwards tested positive for COVID. It was later scheduled to take place at the end of January, but this date was also cancelled after Chimaev tested positive for the virus.
According to White, Chimaev is still suffering from the after effects of the virus, and that he couldn’t prepare for the March date in the way that he would have liked. Instead, there now seems to be a new plan being put together by White, which would see Edwards in action on a new date against a different opponent.
UFC News: Masvidal Among Names In Discussion
There will likely be a big matchup for fans to look forward to, and there are rumours growing that the man to step up to face Edwards could be Jorge Masvidal. It would be a fight that would require no selling, as it is fair to say that there is no love lost between the two stars. Edwards did call out Masvidal in January after the date for the previous welterweight contest was called off, while Masvidal has also teased a fight between the two over recent months.
Masvidal hasn’t fought in the UFC since being beaten by Kamaru Usman in July last year by unanimous decision, and it certainly sounds as though he is looking to get back in the octagon as soon as possible. Another fighter that has reportedly shown an interest in a fight with Edwards has been Stephen Thompson.
