We’re only two episodes of WWE NXT before the next NXT Takeover, which comes on February 14th. The NXT Women’s Championship match is about all that is official at this point, with Io Shirai defending against both Toni Storm & Mercedes Martinez. Meanwhile, the NXT Championship match all but set, as Pete Dunne has taken aim at Finn Balor. Tonight’s big happening is WWE legend and 2021 Royal Rumble winner Edge showing up on NXT for the first time ever, and more action in the 2021 Dusty Rhodes tag team classic.
Edge Makes His NXT Debut
When you consider the status of Edge over the past few years, having returned nearly a decade after career ending next surgery? Few ever expected him to get involved with NXT. However, with his wife Beth Phoenix on commentary? He’s coming for a visit. “In Orlando to visit my wife. Then I had a thought, WWE NXT needs to get Rated R.”
Edge is also the winner of the 2021 Royal Rumble, meaning that he has the option to challenge for the NXT Championship at Wrestlemania, a precedent set last year by Charlotte Flair. This announcement got plenty of excitement from the roster, with everyone wanting a piece of the legend. We’ve even seen teams like Grizzled Young Veterans & MSK lay down challenges to Edge & Christian, after Christian made his proper in-ring return at Royal Rumble.
Edge has stated that he wants to wrestle as much as possible now that he is back, so we can’t rule out him accepting a challenge tonight. It’s not hard to imagine him locking up with someone like Cameron Grimes.
More Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Action
The annual NXT Tag Team tournament continues tonight with some huge quarter final matches. On one side of the bracket, we have Roderick Strong & Adam Cole of The Undisputed Era taking on Zack Gibson & James Drake of Grizzled Young Veterans. Whoever wins that could be the favorite to take the whole tournament.
On the other side of the bracket, we have Gran Metalik & Lince Dorado of Lucha House Party taking on Joaquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza of Legado Del Fantasma. Lucha House Party has the edge over Legado Del Fantasma, having won their previous encounter.
