Jordan Devlin has been keen on offering open challenges since returning to action in NXT UK. This has gotten him in the ring with everyone from Amir Jordan to Ben Carter. However, after being confronted by Trent Seven last week, it appears more heavyweights are interested in testing Devlin. He knew he’d have a match tonight, but not who he’d be facing.
Dave Mastiff Answers The Challenge
Tonight, his challenge would be answered by a super heavyweight, none other than Dave Mastiff. Devlin is no stranger to being outmatched in size and power, but Mastiff will force him to get very creative if he wants to keep his winning ways alive.
Devlin would remind Mastiff that this challenge is for people 205lbs and under, while Mastiff would barely make it onto 305 Live. Mastiff told him that he knows Devlin is just keeping that belt warm for Seven, and tonight he just wants to kick Devlins big head in before shoving him to the mat.
Dave Mastiff Gets Cut Down
The match was made official, and at least Devlin doesn’t have to worry about his championship. Devlin would lock up with Mastiff, go for the wrist, and try to take Mastiff down, only to end up on the mat. Mastiff absorbed a shoulder tackle, only to hit Devlin back twice as hard. Devlin had the running senton scouted, and was shocked to see Mastiff do a cartwheel and then nail the senton for a two count.
Mastiff grabbed a headlock, only to take a jawbreaker before Devlin started throwing strikes, before being thrown across the ring into the turnbuckle. Devlin took a German Suplex, but was able to kick out at two. Some clubbing blows kept Devlin down, before he’d flip out of a German Suplex and foolishly go for the uranage and was shut down.
Devlin countered a suplex, and wiped Mastiff out with a chop block to the back of the knee. A dragon screw and another chop block was followed by the leg of Mastiff being abused on the ropes. If Devlin keeps Mastiff down, the power is not as much of an issue. Even when Mastiff got back up, he was slower and an easy target for strikes.
Jordan Devlin Nearly Gets Crushed
Mastiff was set up on the top rope so Devlin could pull him down into the Devlin Inside suplex, but Mastiff stood his ground and was hit with a diving shoulder block. A slug fest in the middle of the ring saw Mastiff win out, before hitting a massive back body drop and then just threw Devlin across the ring. Mastiff charged into Devlin, before throwing him over the top rope and into the barricade.
Devlin had to flee as Mastiff followed him outside, and go in the ring first to get the high ground. Mastiff countered the stomp, flipped Devlin and gave him a slap for good measure. Devlin would end up on the shoulders of Mastiff, and be able to use that position to send Mastiff outside. Mastiff caught the dive, and hit a Rolling Firemans Carry slam on the outside. This took a toll on both men, who both barely made the ten count to get back into the ring.
Mastiff got in, broke the count, and then broke the barricade as he went for Into The Void, Devlin dodging at the last second. Devlin was met by a headbutt by Mastiff as he got back up, the force sending him back into the ring. Mastiff went up top, and hit a diving headbutt, yet Devlin was able to kick out at two. Devlin got the low dropkick to the previously weakened knee, before hitting a slingshot cutter. He’d go to the top rope, and hit a 450 Splash for the win.
When it comes to David vs. Goliath style matches, few do it better than NXT UK. This was a rare situation where the heavyweight was the face, and Devlin having to pick apart a much bigger opponent to keep his winning streak alive was a great story. These two are just excellent in the ring, and this was a great show of that. Match Rating: 4.25/5 (**** ¼)
