The heavyweight boxing scene is becoming crowded with stars that believe that they are next in line for a title opportunity. Dillian Whyte regained his mandatory tag with a stunning victory against Alexander Povetkin this past weekend, and looks to be in pole position for a future shot.
However, another star has now come out and claimed that he is the star that should be taking on the winner of the Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury clash scheduled for later this year. Oleksandr Usyk is another heavyweight that believes that he is next in line.
Boxing News: Hunter Believes That He Is Next
Michael Hunter is the latest heavyweight that has spoken up about the title picture, and has claimed that should he become IBF mandatory with a victory over Filip Hrgovic, then he should be the next contender in line. The American will clash with Hrgovic in an IBF eliminator bout, which should make for compelling viewing since both fighters have spoken at length about their credentials to be the next challenger.
Hunter also couldn’t help but get involved by offering a prediction for the unification bout, as he revealed that he thinks Tyson Fury will have just too much for Joshua when they clash. However, before the American starts dreaming of a mega-money bout, he shouldn’t take his eyes off the unbeaten Hrgovic. The heavyweight has a perfect 12-0 record at present, and he last beat Rydell Booker by TKO in November to set up this eliminator clash.
Boxing News: Interesting Heavyweight Division
There is no shortage of fights that can be made in the heavyweight division at present, and the clash between Hunter and Hrgovic will likely have the attention of both Joshua and Fury. It would be hard to ignore the winner being a contender for the unified crown, as they would be the mandatory.
However, Whyte’s win over Povetkin has also given him a mandatory opportunity at the world title, and would likely be willing to take on any challenger put in front of him and avoid sitting on the mandatory tag until the title match comes to him. Usyk could be set for a showdown with Joe Joyce, which would ensure one unbeaten record would need to go. Usyk also holds a victory over Hunter, as he beat the American to retain his WBO cruiserweight title back in April 2017.
