After shutting down at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the XFL went through a quick series of moves from firing league staff, coaches, and players to declaring bankruptcy.
Since then, WWE Hall of Famer Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and his partner, new XFL chairwoman/owner Dany Garcia purchased the league from Vince McMahon.
They paid a reported $15 million dollar before it headed to auction, and now they’re in the news again as they’ve entered into talks with the CFL (Canadian Football League) on a joint venture.

New opportunities
Dany Garcia made a statement on her twitter and shared the news on XFL.com:
“Since we first acquired the XFL, we have focused on identifying partners who share our vision and values on and off the field. A vision filled with opportunity, innovation and the highest level of entertainment value for the benefit of our athletes, fans and communities. The CFL has expressed that similar sentiment and jointly we recognize a great opportunity to build exciting innovative football experiences that make the most of each league’s unique strengths. I look forward to our continued discussions and we will update the sports community as we have more to share.”
The CFL Commissioner, Randy Ambrosie, shared her sentiment:
“Canada has an exciting game and devoted fans, and our discussion with the XFL provides a tremendous opportunity to build on that strong foundation. We look forward to exploring how we might work with one of the most innovative sports brands in the world to grow the game, engage fans in new ways, and reach new audiences. We look forward to seeing what possibilities our discussions might uncover, and to sharing those with our fans as the process unfolds.”
Returning to the field
The XFL was heading in a positive direction as it received praise from former NFL players and coaches for its innovation and approach to the game.
Unfortunately, they were one of many businesses that suffered and were shut down thanks to the pandemic, and the league currently doesn’t have any plans to return to the field in 2021.
They also stated 2022 is a possibility but they’re holding off on making and declarations until their talks with the CFL are complete.
The CFL, for its part, will be reportedly returning to the field in 2021 on June 10 with their preseason beginning in May.
With the NFL reeling with low ratings and struggles, this will be a welcomed addition to the professional football world and we can’t wait to see what the fruits of their labors are.
