It has been a long time coming, but Leon Edwards will make his long-awaited return to the octagon this weekend, as he takes on Belal Muhammad in the main event at Fight Night. There had been hope that the next time we saw the British fighter would have been in a contest against Khamzat Chimaev.
However, that fight looks as though it is doomed, as it has already been called off on three previous occasions. The fight was called off for the final time earlier in the year, as the Russian was still suffering with the effects of COVID-19.
UFC News: Edwards Looks To Make Mark
It must have been a frustrating time for the British fighter, as he hasn’t fought for over 20 months since beating Rafael dos Anjos. As well as the called off fights against Chimaev, he had also been in line to fight Tyron Woodley, but that fight was also called off. The fighter from Birmingham, England revealed in the press conference before the big night of action that he wants to prove to fans that he is the best fighter in the world.
He is certainly on a hot-streak of form, as he has won his last eight, as he has responded excellently since being beaten by Kamaru Usman in December 2015. Dana White has revealed that Edwards could be in line for a title opportunity should he put in an excellent performance this weekend against Muhammad.
UFC News: Muhammad Looking For Huge Win
There isn’t any denying that Edwards will come into the fight as the massive favourite to get the win this weekend. His opponent is ranked at 13th in the welterweight rankings, and this will be Muhammad’s second fight in just under a month. He was victorious last time out, as he picked up a decision win against Dhiego Lima, which was his fourth successive victory. However, this will be a much harder assignment ahead of him.
There are also two other interesting bouts on the main card this weekend, as Misha Cirkunov and Ryan Spann clash in the light heavyweight division. That fight will serve as the co-main event this weekend. Meanwhile, Dan Ige will be back in action against Gavin Tucker, in what should be an engaging fight in the featherweight division. Ige will be looking to avenge the defeat he suffered against Calvin Kattar in July last year, while Tucker will be looking for a fourth straight win.
