Munich – UFC icon Conor McGregor is fueling the rumors of a commitment to a top soccer club – and irritates with a statement about the purchase of Manchester United.
It was merely a tweet with which Conor McGregor caused attention at the end of April, when in world soccer just the topic of a Super League took on a life of its own.
McGregor: What’s going on with United?
The vision that the richest top clubs would form their own pool with even more capital and profit-maximization plans turned into a fiasco shortly thereafter – but McGregor’s Twitter statement continues to flourish.
What happened. “Hey guys, I’m thinking about buying Manchester United! What do you think?” the UFC icon had initially declared.
Simply flippantly, or did the message hold an actually seriously mean core, many asked themselves in addition – in order to get from McGregor now at least a new statement regarding its connection to the Red Devils, whose fans protested recently all the more against the owner family around club boss Joel Glazer because of its Super League plans.
So much so that there was even a storm on the pitch before the top match against Liverpool FC, including the abandonment of the game.
And McGregor, always good for a scandal or a sensational episode? He apparently continues to think about getting involved – although perhaps not necessarily alone at United anymore.
Asked about this again by a fan on Twitter, “The Notorious” declared: “I’m definitely interested in winning a sports team at some point! Both Celtic and ManUnited are teams I like for sure. But I’m open-minded. I feel like I could do great things for a club.”
However, the Irishman left it open what these might look like in concrete terms.
What is likely, however, is that even if McGegor has become filthy rich through his pugilistic sport and various investment income, and his fortune is estimated at around 165 million euros, the 32-year-old is simply too light a caliber for an estimated takeover bid for a brand like Man United and thus 3 billion pounds.
