UFC President Dana White explained why contenders, former friends, and now rivals Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal were not the coaches on ‘The Ultimate Fighter 29’ show.
Many fans were surprised when UFC named featherweights Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega as the coaches for the current season of ‘TUF’. The talent of both fighters is not in question. However, for months there were rumors that the show would star Covington and Masvidal. Therefore, when the coaches were revealed, many fans were disappointed.
Dana White admits Volkanovski and Ortega were not first choice for TUF
In a recent podcast, Dana White explained why Covington and Masvidal were not selected as coaches. According to the president, several fighters were considered to be the coaches, including champion Amanda Nunes. But, at the end of the day UFC decided to give the opportunity to featherweight fighters.
“As we went into the season, we looked at a lot of different scenarios in who the coaches could be. Amanda Nunes was looked at as a coach, too. Then you have to start calling these guys and find out what they’re doing personally, this, that and all that crap. And then the whole picture clears up and you end up with Volkanovski and Ortega. But you look at a lot of different coaches before the show.”
Season 29 of TUF premiered Tuesday night with Volkanovski and Ortega as the show’s coaches. Covington recently criticized UFC for their choices of coaches for the reality show, saying they lack entertainment and that he would have accepted the opportunity if it had been offered to him. But ultimately, this is UFC and White’s choice, and hopefully, this comeback season of TUF ends up being a good one.
