After a shocking 237 episodes, it might be finally the end for the Cruiserweight centric show in WWE, 205 Live. Being started up following the success of the Cruiserweight Classic in 2016, 205 Live helped many talents find their footing in WWE. Notable names who passed through include Buddy Murphy, Tony Nese, Cedric Alexander, Mustafa Ali, Drew Gulak and Noam Dar. They were able to have some of their best matches in their WWE run there, but it might be time to say goodbye to this brand.
WWE Released Half The 205 Live Roster And Did Nothing To Promote The Latest Episode
Yesterday was the latest batch of WWE releases. 14 names in total were cut, all from NXT & 205 Live. This included over half of the already small 205 Live roster, and all the names who were in the initial Cruiserweight Classic. Tony Nese, Ariya Daivari, Samir & Sunil Singh, August Grey and Curt Stallion were all cut. This left Ari Sterling, Asher Hale, Grayson Waller, and Ikeman Jiro as 205 Live exclusive talents.
Generally, while WWE doesn’t do much to promote 205 Live, they do the basics. They have a 205 Live Twitter account, who didn’t tweet during the show. WWE.com will generally have a photo gallery up for each episode, but this week lacked that. They didn’t even put a unique thumbnail on the episode on WWE Network. All this and the reduced roster points to the lowest company interest in 205 Live to date, and that could lead to the end.
Finally Fully Absorbing The Cruiserweights Into WWE NXT
Considering there are only four names left on the roster, and the NXT Cruiserweight Championship rarely found its way to 205 Live since they started taping the show before NXT? It would make sense to just finally fully absorb 205 Live into NXT. Hale, Waller, Ikeman & Sterling all fit in fine with NXT, with Sterling likely to make his NXT debut against Cameron Grimes this coming Tuesday.
WWE will always find a way to fill the time slot left by 205 Live with something new. Even a simple rebranding would work, or it could be given to the long rumored NXT: Evolve project. It’s a miracle 205 Live lasted this long, and it has given us some of the best wrestling WWE has had over the past four years.
