Nate Diaz will return to the octagon next weekend to face Leon Edwards at UFC 263.
Incredibly, the scheduled five-round fight could vault Diaz to the top of the welterweight division. In fact, a win over Leon Edwards would likely prompt Kamaru Usman to offer him a fight for the belt.
Nate Diaz promises to prove at UFC 263 that he’s capable of beating the best
Likewise, it would be expected that with the win, Edwards can finally cement a long-awaited title shot. While Diaz is considered the underdog by most, it appears that Diaz himself feels as confident as ever.
“I’ve been fighting for the last 10, 15 years,” said Nate, speaking at a UFC preview. “I’ve done it all. I’ve fought all these guys. I’ve done more and I’ve done it better than anybody. Keeping it real all the way to the end. I’m like a triathlete, I get better with age. Nobody has stayed on top as long as I have, and I’m still head of the pack. I’m there to show people that I’ll beat the best of the best. If I’m not going to fight the biggest fight I can find, I’ll fight the best fighter I can find.”
The UFC fan favorite hasn’t fought since coming up short in his bid to become the inaugural WBC headliner. Diaz took a beating from Jorge Masvidal for three rounds before the ringside doctor called off the UFC 244 main event due to a cut.
Diaz spent a long time chasing a rematch with “Gamebred” before finally settling for a bout with the oft-avoided Englishman Edwards. “Rocky” has been at the top of the welterweight division for some time, but has not been able to face the champion, Kamaru Usman.
