When you look at the list of WWE releases from 2021, Samoa Joe is one of the biggest names. There has been a ton of speculation of him going back to Impact Wrestling or Ring of Honor, or making a big debut for All Elite Wrestling. However, a report from Fightful Select indicates that he might be set to rejoin WWE, but head back to NXT. Several NXT talents have caught wind of this news, and feel he will be accepting a new deal soon.
Samoa Joe Was At His Best In WWE With His Time In NXT
While at first this is a disappointing prospect compared to a debut for a hotter promotion like AEW, Samoa Joe returning to NXT has serious potential. It would see Joe return to the ring, and he was at his best in WWE during his time in NXT. He’s a two time NXT Champion, having first won the belt from Finn Balor, before trading championship wins with Shinsuke Nakamura.
Joe was an absolute monster in NXT, and if Karrion Kross is able to retain the NXT Championship at Takeover: In Your House? Samoa Joe would be the perfect name to take aim at Kross next. There are a lot of fresh matchups for Joe on the brand, and we could see him have a career resurgence there like Finn Balor recently had.
WWE Looking To Resign Key Talents On Smaller Deals
This move from Samoa Joe falls in line with the past of WWE. When they do mass releases, they will often look to resign names on smaller deals, and Samoa Joe could have been someone they are looking to do this with. All the recent cuts have been for budget reasons, as WWE looks to reserve some impulsive spending in recent years.
It’s unclear how much Samoa Joe was making in recent years, but considering he was near the top of the card consistently? He wasn’t making small money. WWE could look to sign him for just NXT once again, and get him on a smaller deal at the same time. Joe gets to wrestle again, WWE gets to keep him away from the competition, and NXT gets a major name.
