When Ember Moon returned to NXT following a career threatening ACL injury, she had intentions of becoming champion once again. She’s already achieved that goal with Shotzi Blackheart when they claimed the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championships, but tonight she has a chance to regain the NXT Women’s Championship.
Moon has proven that she can take Raquel Gonzalez down with her veteran skills and deadly Eclipse finisher, and has the motivation after Gonzalez took out Blackheart. She just wants to hurt Gonzalez tonight. Gonzalez, on the other hand, intends to put Moon with Blackheart on the shelf.
Ember Moon Starts Off Hot
Moon got right into it with a single leg dropkick and hurricanrana, but Gonzalez stayed vertical. Gonzalez countered a crossbody by shoving her away, before sending her to the apron and sending her to the barricade. Back in the ring, Gonzalez would continue to dominate and overpower Moon, stopping all offense in its tracks.
Even a diving codebreaker would be caught, and Moon dropped with a one armed sidewalk slam. Gonzalez hit a twisting Vader Bomb for a two count, before applying a Canadian Backbreaker in the middle of the ring before sending her hard to the mat. Moon kept on fighting with some lariats and a superkick, before blasting Gonzalez with a forearm smash to drop her.
A Code Red got a two count, as well as sent a shout out to Shotzi Blackheart. Moon would look for a submission on the mat, doing her best to hurt Gonzalez. Dakota Kai would push the ropes to Gonzalez to save the match. Moon would keep the fight coming with a brawl on the outside, and she’d set up The Eclipse in the ring.
Raquel Gonzalez Has To Do It Herself
Kai ran a distraction, and allowed Gonzalez to set up a Superplex for a two count. Gonzalez set up the one armed powerbomb, and Moon countered into a pinfall for a two count. Moon was flattened with a running big boot, before Gonzalez went for a suplex. This was countered into a snap Eclipse, before Moon hit the diving codebreaker. Moon went up to the top rope, and it was Eclipse time.
She’d get all of it, and Kai would get the foot of Gonzalez on the rope before Shotzi Blackheart returned and took her out. Gonzalez was alone now, and Moon wanted to get the submission. Moon would shove her into the ring post when the fight went to the apron, before hitting a DDT onto the ramp.
By the time Gonzalez was back in the ring, Moon was only able to get a two count. Another attempt at the Eclipse was countered, and Gonzalez would nail Snake Eyes and the One Armed Powerbomb for the win, getting defense #2.
Ember Moon and Raquel Gonzalez have incredible chemistry, and that was on full display here. There were a few messy spots along the way, but even the interference from Kai served a big purpose. Gonzalez showed in the end she didn’t need Kai to get the win, something which might be crucial to her reign. Match Rating: 4/5 (****)
