With the Money in the Bank pay-per-view coming up, all eyes are turned to SummerSlam instead and for good reason with Edge and Seth Rollins is a rumored match.
It’s expected to be the first fully open stadium event since the start of the pandemic. It’s taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on August 21, so it makes sense the WWE wants it to be memorable.
With that in mind, we’ve heard plenty of rumors of John Cena facing Roman Reigns because he’s the only one left to stop Reigns and Brock Lesnar challenging Bobby Lashley in a fans’ dream match.
This could be just another rumor, but we think it’s more than that. The WWE is putting too much behind the show not to expect something to be up.
Unfinished business
WrestleVotes shared the news via Twitter:
“Along w/ Roman Reigns vs John Cena for SummerSlam, WWE is planning on stacking the SmackDown side with another major matchup. Source says idea as of now is for a Seth Rollins vs Edge first time ever match.”

What makes this even more believable is that in a Sports Illustrated interview, Rollins had previously stated he and Edge have unfinished business from last year’s Royal Rumble and their previous confrontation.
In 2014 following Team Cena’s victory over Team Authority at Survivor Series on an episode of Raw, Edge and Christian hosted the Cutting Edge Peep Show.
Seth Rollins and the Big Show were their guests, and Rollins threatened to break Edge’s neck on the MITB briefcase if Cena didn’t reinstate The Authority.
Cena gave in to save Edge since Edge had recently suffered his neck injury, and in the above mentioned interview Rollins said he thinks it’d be a storyline fans would enjoy seeing continue, and he’s not wrong.
Return to TV
Edge hasn’t been on WWE television since Roman Reigns pinned him and Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 37, and he’s been promoted to appear on a July 16 episode of Smackdown when fans return.
Edge is reportedly under a part timer’s contract and is on the creative team for Smackdown, so it makes sense they’ve been holding him back to help entice fans to return.
This will start his possible run toward SummerSlam as a face to counter Rollins’ messiah/savior persona.
In short, it looks like they’re building SummerSlam as the show where the legends have to save the current product from itself.
