One of the best undercard tag teams in AEW right now is The Varsity Blondes. A direct reference to the now iconic Hollywood Blondes, a tag team from WCW which contained “Stunning” Steve Austin and Brian Pillman, Pillman’s own son has used it to help carry on the legacy of his father. Brian Pillman Jr. & Griff Garrison have risen the ranks, and become a common fixture on AEW programming, and now will be able to truly set in their roots with AEW as Pillman Jr. can truly focus on AEW full time.
Brian Pillman Jr. Was Working With Major League Wrestling Prior To AEW, Was Stuck In Contract
Back when Brian Pillman Jr. first started working with AEW, he was still under contract with Major League Wrestling. MLW was not taping through the pandemic, putting their talent in a rough spot where they couldn’t really try to find other work. Pillman Jr. managed to find a loophole which allowed him to work with AEW & OVW despite this.
He’d have to give up OVW to focus on AEW, despite becoming the OVW World Champion shortly before making this choice. Since then, Pillman Jr. has really come into his own on AEW programming in both singles and his previously mentioned tag team with Griff Garrison. Now, his focus towards AEW has paid off as he is a full time AEW talent.
No Official Signing From AEW Just Yet, But Pillman Was Finally Released From MLW
In a report from Fightful Select, we learned that his contract with MLW has fully expired. “Brian Pillman Jr. will not be present at this weeks Major League Wrestling tapings, and will effectively be a full time AEW star moving forward.” was what the report had to say. We have not gotten official word on AEW signing both Pillman Jr. or Garrison, but considering how much focus they received?
It would be baffling if we didn’t see a “Varsity Blondes Are All Elite” graphic soon, likely with AEW just waiting on getting everything nice and official with both men first. We will very likely see them become AEW World Tag Team Champions down the line, as they have truly become one of AEW’s best young teams alongside Private Party. It’s stars like Pillman Jr. who will control the future of AEW for sure.
