Earlier today in Japan was night two of the Summer Struggle tour for New Japan Pro Wrestling. Much like night one, it was truly a one match show, with the main event being the main draw, especially after Kota Ibushi was pulled off the card at the last minute. Ibushi is still expected to be on hand for Tokyo Dome, he is simply down and out for a few days due to the after effects of the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. However the main event went on as planned, as Los Ingobernables de Japon members Tetsuya Naito & SANADA challenged Dangerous Tekkers (Zack Sabre Jr. & Taichi) for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships.
SANADA & Tetsuya Naito Claim Tag Team Gold For Los Ingobernables de Japon
If you’re going to have a one match card, the one match needs to deliver and deliver this match did. Naito & SANADA aren’t a traditional tag team, but both came in as former champions with different partners, Naito having been in a successful team known as No Limit with Yujiro Takahashi, and SANADA alongside EVIL. Meanwhile Dangerous Tekkers are perhaps the best tag team in NJPW today in terms of in ring performances.
This made it no surprise when this match was incredible, with some early reactions from fans calling it one of the best NJPW tag team matches of the year. Any time SANADA & Zack Sabre Jr. share a ring together you’re getting a good match anyways, due to the meshing of their technically sound styles.
However what makes this one extra notable is we have new champions now after a 36 minute epic. SANADA & Naito were successful in defeating Dangerous Tekkers, giving SANADA his third reign with this belt and Naito his second.
Now What’s The Plan For Tokyo Dome?
Now begs the question of who will be their first challenge. Taichi recently called out Kazuchika Okada & Hiroshi Tanahashi to rise up as a tag team for Tokyo Dome, expecting to still be champion as they entered that venue. While Dangerous Tekkers vs. Okada & Tanahashi would be big, instead having Naito & SANADA defend the gold against the aces of NJPW would be massive. SANADA & Okada had an excellent feud, and Naito has a deep history with both men at Tokyo Dome.
Another option is a simple rematch with Dangerous Tekkers. Today’s match was incredible, and putting it on an even bigger stage would be something fans wouldn’t necessarily disagree with. Taichi & ZSJ demanded this, and it’s the safest and most likely option. Finally, there is the usual standby of Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa. They will always slip into the title scene eventually anyways, making them a constant option.
