Right now in AEW, there is one match that fans want to see above all else. That is Hangman Page vs. Kenny Omega for the AEW World Championship. It seems like a foregone conclusion that Page will be the one to finally take the championship off of Omega, and for a while it seemed like All Out 2021 would be the place it finally happened. However, this no longer seems to be the case, as Page is no longer expected to be the opponent of Omega at this PPV event.
Plans Have Changed, Leaving Hangman Page Out Of The Title Picture
As per Dave Meltzer and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, plans have changed in AEW. Page was initially set to face Omega for the championship at the event, but that is no longer the case. The loss in the 5 vs. 5 elimination tag team match as of right now, is the pause point for this storyline. In that match, Page was the last man standing for The Dark Order, but was overwhelmed by a three on one attack from The Elite, before being dropped with The One Winged Angel.
It is now unclear who Omega will be defending the championship against at this event, but a match with Christian Cage is looking the most likely. Christian is still undefeated since making his debut in AEW, with his only loss being in a battle royale. They set up a match with Christian & Omega soon after he made his debut, and it would be a solid match for a PPV, especially one where everything is likely to be overshadowed.
The Potential Of A CM Punk Debut Would Have Overshadowed This Match
Right now, it’s been heavily teased that AEW has gotten CM Punk to sign a contract. This will likely all come together in August, as AEW has announced a major event in Chicago, Illinois, the hometown of Punk. The First Dance will likely be when Punk makes his debut, with a return match coming as part of All Out.
Punk has already been called out by Darby Allin, which is a likely match as Allin is not actively in a feud this close to a PPV. This match would overshadow anything on a card, including Hangman Page winning the championship. You can only win your first world championship once, and AEW will want to properly save that moment.
