On This Day in Wrestling History we’re paying tribute to the First Lady of Wrestling, Miss Elizabeth, as he made her WWE debut on July 30, 1985.
Debuts can be tricky if it’s not done right or the fans don’t connect with the person, but neither of those were a concern as the WWE was hitting it’s creative stride in the mid 1980s.
The WWE were continuing to acquire the top talent in the land to further establish themselves as the premier professional wrestling company.
One of the signings was “Macho Man” Randy Savage and for weeks the various managers in the WWE courted him in an effort to bring him under their influence.
As the new premier wrestler, Savage attracted some of the best managers in the business as Luscious Johnny V, Mr. Fuji, Bobby Heenan, Freddie Blassie, and Jimmy Hart all threw their hats in the ring.
Savage kept everyone in suspense as he announced he made his decision, and then when the time was right, Miss Elizabeth walked out from the back looking every bit as glamorous as a princes.
Almost never happened
While it ended up being the perfect choice, we almost saw Missy Hyatt in Miss Elizabeth’s role.
It’s been reported that George Scott recommended Hyatt for the role. She was working at World Class Championship Wrestling, but Savage was intent on his real life wife being in the role and pitched that idea.
Miss Elizabeth was chosen and she spent the better part of the next several years managing Savage despite the couple divorcing in 1992.
After a brief hiatus, she returned to chase off Queen Sheri after Savage lost in a career versus career match with the Ultimate Warrior in a moment that had fans crying everywhere.
Despite Savage leaving the WWE and being divorced from her, he had her brought into WCW to manage him again and for a brief time they captured the magic they had created in the WWE.
One of a kind
Miss Elizabeth exuded kindness and gentleness whenever she appeared in the arena or on camera and fans couldn’t help but to fall in love with her.
There have been so few that made such a huge impact in the wrestling business that said as little publicly as she did, but she could convey her thoughts and emotions so well with her expressions she didn’t need to talk.
It was a great moment in professional wrestling when she made her debut, and This Day in Wrestling History will continue to remember her for what she added to Savage and the sport in general.
