On August 1st, we will once again see Tomohiro Ishii, Hirooki Goto, and YOSHI-HASHI defend the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championships. They’ve been champions for nearly a year now, and many have felt their reign has really elevated the titles to a level where they actually mean something. The career of YOSHI-HASHI was reignited due to this reign, and they will look to make their eight defense on August 1st. However, Tomohiro Ishii has an extra stipulation in mind for Suzuki-Gun.
Tomohiro Ishii Wants Suzuki-Gun To Rebrand When CHAOS Defeats Them
On the most recent Summer Struggle card in NJPW, the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Champions were in eight man tag team action against fellow CHAOS member, Robbie Eagles. They faced their next challengers of Minoru Suzuki, Zack Sabre Jr. & Taichi, who also brought DOUKI along for the ride. When the dust settled CHAOS came out on top, and when they got backstage, Tomohiro Ishii would look to spice up the coming title match.
He would denounce Minoru Suzuki backstage, and say that if CHAOS wins on August 1st, the name of the faction should be changed to Taichi-Gun. This stipulation wasn’t outright accepted, but it very well could be added to the match, and be used to help refresh the late stage of Minoru Suzuki’s career.
Minoru Suzuki Isn’t Doing Much In NJPW Currently
At this point of his career, Minoru Suzuki has really started to slow down. He hasn’t been doing much of note in NJPW, having a brief feud withT Shingo Takagi in 2020 before an underwhelming run in the G1 Climax, with just one highlight of a match against Kota Ibushi. Suzuki remains popular, but he no longer really benefits Suzuki-Gun.
Many fans would welcome the name change, as Taichi or Zack Sabre Jr. would likely be the groups most important name at the moment. It also wouldn’t be the first time this faction changed names, as it was originally led by Satoshi Kojima as Kojima-Gun, before Suzuki took over.
This stipulation would add a lot of interest to what might otherwise be a rather unremarkable title defense. It really puts the position of Suzuki in NJPW into question. Do you think Suzuki-Gun as we know it could be done? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
