In case you missed the news, Ciryl Gane will face Derrick Lewis for the interim heavyweight title at UFC 265. This is a controversial decision from the UFC, considering Francis Ngannou only claimed the title only three short months ago. Ngannou hasn’t been shy about declaring his unhappiness with this choice, but Ciryl Gane feels no regrets.
Gane told MMAfighting.com that: ““I can understand [where Francis is coming from] but [I don’t feel bad for him], It’s just an interim title, so the champion is still Francis.
Ciryl Gane on Ngannou controversy: “I don’t feel bad for him”
Not really [feeling bad] for Francis. If I was Francis, this would be nothing for me.”
Gane is fresh off the back of fantastic performances against some of the most dangerous men in the division, including Junior dos Santos, Tanner Boser, and knockout specialist Jairzinho Rozenstruik. Gane is presently undefeated in MMA, and such a debut marked him for title contention. When asked about his feelings on the matter, he elaborated:
““It was awesome, I was really happy. For me, it means something. I’m a young guy. I’ve just arrived and I’m in the headline [spot] after just three years in MMA.”
Derrick Lewis has long been touted as a serious contender for the heavyweight title, and it’s likely that whoever wins the bout between Lewis and Gane will fight Ngannou next.
Gane is unfazed by Derrick Lewis, complimenting his fellow fighter’s power: “This guy is very dangerous, we know that.
Like Jairzinho, a little bit, when this guy touches you just one time, you’re down. And that’s very dangerous, but I think we’re gonna manage that style, touch him, and he’ll never touch me. I think I have the skills to do that.
Yes, [I’ve been impressed with him] because some people say he doesn’t have fight IQ, doesn’t have some skills. But he knows what he has, and he can use it very well.
I think this guy is really dangerous.” Gane, however, has a plan.
“But I think we’re gonna pressure him like we did Volkov. We’re gonna make it [so he’s] in deep water, I’m gonna give him a lot of pressure.”
This plan worked wonders against the likes of Volkov and Rozenstruik, so it’s only natural that Gane would expect to do well against yet another heavyweight.
Which way do you see this fight going? Will Ciryl Gane extend his winning streak and add Derrick Lewis’ name to his list of victories? Who will take on Ngannou and unify the title? Let us know in the comments.
