A few weeks ago, during a live video on Instagram, Khamzat Chimaev threw some words against Khabib Nurmagomedov and his team.
This took the MMA world by surprise and also the Russian community. Part of the problem is attributed to a deteriorating relationship between Khabib and Chechen politician Ramzan Kadyrov. During the live video posted by the politician, Chimaev commented “we’ll tear him to pieces, if he wants,” referring to Nurmagomedov.
Khabib talks about Khamzat Chimaev and his controversial statements against him
This provoked the annoyance of Khabib’s circle. In fact, his cousin Abubakar Nurmagomedov responded at length to Chimaev’s words. Abubakar chided Khamzat’s stance and attitude and questioned his qualities as a Muslim and loyalty to his country and people.
This prompted another response from Chimaev on social media, in a post that he later deleted.
“I live where I want, brother. Maybe I am not careful about what I say. But you told the Dagestanis not to say they are Chechens when they travel in Europe.”
Afterwards, Chimaev would focus on Khabib and question him for assaulting fellow countryman Artem Lobov. This in reference to the 2019 incident that escalated the tension between McGregor and Nurmagomedov. The post appeared on Twitter briefly before being deleted by Khamzat. It featured these images of the incident, accompanied by questioning.
“I have a one-on-one motto, not a crowd against one. If you had something to say, you should have contacted me directly, not done it in public. We’ll see you over there in America, boy! When your brother shouted to the world that he would crush everyone he did it with confidence, can’t I express confidence in myself?”
Now, after the most recent event of his Eagle Fighting Championship promotion, Khabib appeared before the Russian media. There, the former UFC lightweight champion answered questions about whether he was disappointed in Chimaev.
“There was no disappointment. I have never seen him, we only talked on the phone. Disappointment happens when you expect something from someone. I never expected anything from him. He can do whatever he wants. If he feels it’s necessary to write that, then let him do it. Those questions should be asked of him.”
One of the reporters sought to rebuke Khabib and asked him if he would seek to confront Chimaev as he did with Lobov. Nurmagomedov remained calm and argued that they were different situations.
“I don’t think I’m going to approach him. Should I? You heard what Lobov said, didn’t you? So why are you comparing those two statements? When someone calls you a #$%& coward, it doesn’t matter who says it. You have to settle it with him. But if a guy says he’s going to beat you or tear you to pieces. I don’t see any reason to confront him. But when someone insults you, you have to confront him. That’s how I was brought up.”
