UFC lightweight contender Michael Chandler welcomes the possibility of a fight against Justin Gaethje, promising a standout finish either way.
Chandler was recently defeated in his bid to become the new UFC lightweight champion when he was defeated by Charles Oliveira in the UFC 262 main event fight. Although Michael was defeated in the second round of the fight, it was a sensational bout while it lasted.
Chandler responds to Eddie Alvarez’s comments and talks about fighting Gaethje
Chandler was very successful in the first round, just short of finishing Oliveira. So, despite the fact that he was defeated in the fight, his overall stock didn’t drop that much in the division.
That’s why Chandler is hoping for another big-name matchup for his next fight. Michael spoke openly about a possible showdown against Gaethje, who hasn’t fought since his submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov last fall.
Recently, there have been rumblings from UFC President Dana White suggesting that this is a fight that ‘matchmakers’ might consider. If that’s the case, Chandler wants it.
“I think Gaethje-Chandler is probably the fan favorite fight on the entire planet right now. I think he will either become part of my highlights or I become part of his. The two of us get close and enjoy a good, passionate fight. That’s how he’s connected. That’s how I’m wired. Justin Gaethje has been on the UFC’s mind, on our mind, myself and my manager, since we signed with UFC. It just hasn’t happened for a lot of different reasons.”
It will be interesting to see what UFC does with Chandler and Gaethje next. It seems to make a lot of sense to pit them against each other, but the UFC lightweight division is a shark tank and there are plenty of other exciting fights for both of them. But if both Chandler and Gaethje want to get rid of each other, then this seems like the fight to make.
A few days ago, Eddie Alvarez, who boasts wins over both, noted that he considered Gaethje the favorite. The former Bellator and UFC champion noted that Justin’s style was a bad matchup for Chandler. Far from being upset, Michael claims that among the elite anything is possible.
“Well, in first, if we look at top five or top six, there are scenarios where we are all bad matchups for each other. There are also areas where we are good matchups for each other. What I will say is that if Eddie Alvarez can beat Justin Gaethje, I can definitely beat Justin Gaethje. I won’t beat him by TKO, I’ll knock him out. I will impose a high pace just like Eddie did. It will be a fun fight. It’s a fight people want to see.”
