NJPW Summer Struggle Recap (08/17) - Suzuki-Gun & Bullet Club Clash In Super Tag League Finals

It’s time to say goodbye to another NJPW tournament, as Super Junior Tag League comes to an end. It’s been a weird run, with three teams really taking the lead early and maintaining it. This led to Suzuki-Gun, Bullet Club & Flying Tiger being the last teams in the running, but by the end of this show only one will be left standing.

Roppongi 3K was supposed to face Gedo & Dick Togo tonight, but SHO turning on YOH last night and ending their team and Togo & Gedo being out of action due to COVID-19 concerns have halted those plans. Those teams both finished at 0 points. Taguchi & Master Wato could only play spoiler to Flying Tiger, who needed a win to stay in the hunt. Finally, Suzuki-Gun vs. Ishimori & Phantasmo will clash, with the winner likely being the tournament winner.

    Great-O-Khan Shines In Singles Action

However, first there were three matches of non-tournament action. First up, Great-O-Khan got a rare singles match with Tomoaki Honma, and was able to win in 10 minutes and 50 seconds with The Eliminator. Honma rarely works in singles matches, but with so many names out due to COVID-19 related concerns, he stepped up and gave a good showing.

Next up was some tag team action, with Togi Makabe & Toru Yano taking on Jado & Chase Owens. A Neck Lock on Jado at 11 minutes and 21 seconds would get Yano the win for his team. Finally, we had an eight man tag team match, seeing TenKoji team with YOSHI-HASHI & Hirooki Goto taking on a Suzuki-Gun unit of DOUKI, Minoru Suzuki, Zack Sabre Jr. and Taichi. ZSJ was able to submit Tenzan with the Octopus Hold after 15 minutes and 21 seconds.

Suzuki-Gun Wins The Tournament By Toppling BULLET CLUB’s Cutest Tag Team

We’d get the last two matches of tournament action, first with Master Wato & Ryusuke Taguchi taking on Tiger Mask IV & Robbie Eagles. This was a must win match for team Flying Tiger, and a Japanese Leg Roll Clutch after 15 minutes and 40 seconds from Ryusuke Taguchi to Tiger Mask ended their dreams, with both teams finishing at 6 points.

This made El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru vs El Phantasmo & Taiji Ishimori the match that determined the whole tournament. Desperado & Kanemaru came in with 6 points, but a win over Ishimori & Phantasmo would get them to 8 points and have them win with a tie. It was an intense back and forth clash, and after 21 minutes and 4 seconds, Kanemaru would roll up Ishimori for the win.

This is the first Super Junior Tag League win for Suzuki-Gun, and they wasted no time challenging the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions for a match at Wrestle Grand Slam in MetLife stadium. Will the result be the same at Wrestle Grand Slam? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
