We already know who the winner of this match will face, after the result of Miranda Alize & Alex Gracia in the opening match. However now things will get started for the veteran and former longtime Shimmer Champion Nicole Savoy, as she takes on relative newcomer Mazzerati in a second first round match. Savoy is known as The Queen of The Suplex, and is the type of veteran talent you build a division around. Despite this, she can’t overlook Mazzerati’s winning attitude and the skills to back it up.
Mazzerati Shows Some Disrespect Early
Code of Honor would be accepted, but they were showing their intensity. Mazzerati would flex in front of Savoy, before stepping on her shoe and showing more disrespect. Savoy would show her why this was a mistake to underestimate her with a quick takedown. Mazzerati would be able to get back to her feet, and would take Savoy down and try to force a pinfall, but Savoy was too good.
Savoy would grab the arm of Mazzerati with her legs, before looking for a cross armbreaker. This was fought off, and Savoy kept trying, almost getting a crossface before Mazzerati rolled away. Mazzerati would get some space as a commercial break came, knowing that she needs to start taking this veteran a lot more seriously.
Back from the break, Savoy would look for one of her signature suplexes, and Mazzerati fought this off only to end up trapped in an armbar. Savoy learned a lot of tricks from Shayna Baszler over the years, and she would bend and twist the arm of Mazzerati like Baszler does, inflicting a lot of punishment.
Nicole Savoy Shows Why She’s The Queen Of Suplexes
Mazzerati was able to break free and get under the legs of Savoy, before slapping the taste out of her mouth. This would become a bit of a fight, and Mazzerati would nail a running forearm, before Savoy dashed back in with a big uppercut. Mazzerati avoided a charge from Savoy and baited her into the ropes for a Sole Food, before being caught with a fall away slam for a two count.
The Half Nelson suplex was set up, but Mazzerati would fall back into the ropes to counter. Savoy would take a charging knee strike before the second was countered before the Royal Butterfly Suplex got a two count. Mazzerati came back with a Northern Lights Suplex, but was only able to get a near fall.
Savoy dodged two kicks before getting punched in the jaw, before Mazzerati nailed a snap DDT for another near fall. Things were looking dire, before Savoy would catch Mazzerati with the TKO. Half Nelson was applied, and the Half Dragon Suplex would drop Mazzerati on her head, getting Savoy the win.
Savoy is one of the most technically sound women in all of wrestling, but Mazzerati was able to hang in there with her throughout this match. There were a lot of near falls, especially near the end, and it really felt like an upset was coming. However, in the end SavNoy moves one step closer to gold, and will bring more great matches in this tournament. Match Rating: 3.5/5 (*** 1/2)
