Santiago Ponzinibbio is wasting no time in his comeback. After being sidelined for over two years, he wants to fight again as soon as he possibly can. He’s looking to September, and a fight against fellow ranked welterweight Belal Muhammad, to maintain the momentum he picked up since his return to the Octagon.
Ponzinibbio told MMAFighting.com that he wants to take on Muhammad as soon as possible, and to teach Belal a lesson in manners while he’s at it.
Ponzinibbio Wants To Teach Belal Muhammad to “keep his mouth shut”, aims for top-5 opponent
“I want to fight soon – September. There are plenty of guys that are just waiting, but these days I saw Belal calling out Magny for the September 25 card. Brother, I think that’s a great fight.
He was always ranked behind me, and he called me out a couple of fights ago.
He asked to fight me when I wasn’t fighting, he talked about me. Since he’s all that brave and mentioned my name, I want to see if he really is that brave.”
Ponzinibbio is making it his mission to end Belal Muhammad’s six-fight win streak in convincing fashion, preferably at UFC 266 on September 25.
“It can be on that card, or we can do a main event, a five-round fight to beat him up a lot so he learns to keep his mouth shut. I think it would be entertaining for the company. I think it’s a good matchup.
I think it’s a fun fight because of our style. We like to stand and trade, and those are the type of fight that we wanna see like my last fight, a war.
His last fight, wow, it was so boring. I was there, watching it live. People want to see blood and punches to the face, and I’ll give them that.”
The Argentinian fighter’s zeal for combat is matched only by his confidence. He not only wants to take Belal Muhammad out, but has been angling for the top 5 in the welterweight division, who he claims are ducking him.
“[Muhammad] is a fight that makes sense. I really wanted to fight someone closer to the top 5 but the guys that are winning won’t want [to fight me]. Burns, Edwards, Covington. I wanted to beat them up to go back to the top of the division.”
Whether Ponzinibbio has what it takes to challenge Kamaru Usman’s place at the top of the welterweight pile remains to be seen.
