With the WWE doing everything in their power to hand over talent instead of hoarding it, there’s a small number of fans that have an interesting theory about why Vince McMahon is doing this.
And it doesn’t involve selling the WWE.
As strange as it sounds, the rumor is that McMahon’s using WWE releases to try coaxing Tony Kahn into over spending on talent until they have a bloated roster and it forces the company into bankruptcy.
Sounds out there, right?
Farfetched but not unprecedented
In a way it’s not. It’s similar to Ronald Reagan instituting the Star Wars program and others to force the USSR into overspending to keep up with weapons and technology, and it worked.
These actions basically ended the Cold War without a shot being fired, but it’s a far different scenario.
In this case, it’s been reported that the Kahns have more money than the McMahons and they’re savvy business owners so this would be a plan that would ultimately fail unless AEW got really sloppy.
I many fans’ eyes, they view it as when WCW signed so many former WWE talent to guaranteed contracts, but even that doesn’t equate.
The guaranteed contracts were the business model Turner used with the Atlanta Braves and their players, and it carried over to signing talent for WCW.
Afterall, WCW wasn’t allowed free reign as they were overseen by the higher up in Turner Media.
Anything’s possible
While the state of the WWE and its mindset is in question at the moment, we’re not going to say what is or isn’t possible because anything could happen.
Tricking AEW into overspending could have been part of the thinking early on as AEW was young and still finding its footing, but now it seems far less likely.
There’s plenty of room to argue the points back and forth, and that’s what makes having so many wrestling companies gaining prominence gives us. In the end, we’ll just have to wait and see who’s right.
For the moment, we stand by our position that Vince McMahon is getting the WWE set for sale by restructuring it in a more favorable way to entice a higher price.
Afterall, when it comes to business, it’s mainly the bottom like and profit margins that are the determining factor and not so much the releasing of nearly half the company’s talent.
What do you think? Is the WWE releases meant to get AEW to overspend? Let us know in the comments below.
