Ever since showing up in AEW, Malakai Black has taken aim at Cody Rhodes & The Nightmare Family. First Cody fell, then Brock Anderson, and now Lee Johnson has gotten the attention of Black. Johnson came to the aid of Brock Anderson, and Black gave him one week to apologize for stepping into the ring – or he will be destroyed. There was no apology, and Black has promised to take his time with Johnson tonight. Johnson is a promising young talent, but can he beat the dangerous veteran that is Malakai Black?
Lee Johnson Tries To Hide His Fear
The vibe of the arena shifted as Malakai entered the ring. His entrance only gets more and more intimidating as it becomes clear how dangerous he was. In respect to Big Shotty, he showed zero fear on his way to the ring. He looked ready for revenge for Cody Rhodes, Arn Anderson & Brock Anderson. The bell rang, and Johnson was starting to show the fear, taking deep breaths as he stared at Black from across the ring.
He’d try to lock up with Black, and be sent off the ropes. We’d get a Type O Negative reference on commentary, about as odd as when Excalibur referenced Stan Rogers. Johnson would simply stay away from the deadly strikes of Black, and get a back elbow to the face of Black. The crowd chanted that he fucked up, and Black would isolate him in the corner with some hard european uppercuts.
Johnson fought back with a kick before being beaten right back down. As promised, Black isn’t rushing to defeat Johnson, enjoying the fight and playing with his food. A massive knee to the stomach got a one count, before going right into a rear chinlock. Black would lose the hold, but apply a double wrist lock. Johnson again fought to his feet, getting trapped in a sleeper hold but was unable to break free even with a back suplex.
Malakai Black Gives A Choice
Black would be sent into the corner before taking some elbows to the face, Johnson finally showing some life and sending Black to the outside with a dropkick. A fast dive to the outside saw Black fall, and in the ring a big frog splash was used to set up something, only to be countered. Johnson was kicked in the face by a PK, and Black was truly mad. He’d be brutalized in the corner, with the Black Mass in the midst.
Black would shove a steel chair into the ring, keen on just hurting Johnson. Instead, he’d offer it to Johnson, giving him a fighting chance. He’d ask if he cares about the win, or revenge more before turning around and offering a free shot. Johnson would hesitate and get knocked out.
This was the longest match of Malakai Black yet, but was still just an extended squash match. However the question posed at the end with Black seeing what type of man Johnson is gave it something unique. Black is proving to perhaps be AEW’s most unique, and potentially in the future, most fleshed out character. However in terms of action, it was slow paced and not too impressive, aside from the crisp striking of Black. Match Rating: 2/5 (**)
After the match, Dustin Rhodes would hit the ring and Malakai left the ring. Rhodes is next on the list it seems. Dustin Rhodes was interviewed by Mark Henry after the match, and would express some serious anger. Rhodes would say that this Wednesday on Dynamite, he’s coming right for him. Malakai Black comes from a place of darkness, but that is where Rhodes has thrived for five decades. There is nothing that can be done to Dustin Rhodes that hasn’t been done.
Would Lee Johnson have used the steel chair or not? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
