Despite weeks of boasting about his physique and agility at 195 pounds, Tito Ortiz failed to make weight for his fight against Anderson Silva. Ortiz weighed in at 200 pounds, a full five pounds over the agreed weight limit for the fight.
Anderson Silva made weight at just over 192 pounds, a full three pounds under the weight limit. Silva claimed in a post-weigh-in interview that the fight will still go ahead, but doing so would give Ortiz a near-ten-pound advantage. This may be exacerbated if Ortiz was cutting weight for the weigh-in, as many fighters are prone to doing.
Silva vs Ortiz Boxing Update: Ortiz Misses Weight, May Miss Fight
Regardless of Ortiz’s weight, Anderson Silva is proud of his own pre-fight preparation. When asked about his approach to the boxing match, he was happy simply to be competing again.
“Fight is fight. Preparing my mind, preparing my body. I’m so happy to be here again, to fight. Thank you to my coach, for this comeback to sport.
Silva famously preferred to do most of his talking in the Octagon, and he clearly plans to continue this trend in the boxing ring. After the weigh-ins, Anderson Silva was reserved in his commentary. He expressed serious doubt as to Ortiz’s respect for the fight, and for his fans as well as the sport. According to Anderson Silva, failing to make weight is a show of disrespect.
“We signed a contract. It’s a one-night fight. Why you don’t make weight? You don’t prove your respect for the people who are watching? You don’t prove your respect for the fans! I don’t have nothing to talk [about]. I do my part. I’m a professional, and that’s it.
I don’t know, why do you sign the contract?” As for whether the fight will still go ahead, Silva’s answer was simple. “Yeah, absolutely… I’m ready.”
Silva credited his mindset and his coaching team for his positive approach to boxing and his return to combat sports competition. “Wow, you know, when you’re training hard, when you’re putting your heart in your job, you love something, you do your best.
It’s not different for me. I do my best the whole time. I never disrespect my fans. I make weight, do my best, come prepared in my mind. Come prepared in my body for doing my best inside the ring.”
Silva vs Ortiz, if it goes ahead, will be on the undercard for Holyfield vs Belfort, live on FITE TV pay-per-view. I think eight rouds is very intersting. We’ll see.
