UFC: Michael Bisping Advises Conor McGregor to take “tune-up fight” next

Michael Bisping has yet again taken to the airwaves to deliver some advice to Conor McGregor.  Speaking on his Believe You Me podcast, Bisping encouraged Conor McGregor not to rush into a fourth fight – and potential third consecutive loss – with Dustin Poirier. Instead, McGregor should take the opportunity to “tune up” against a lesser opponent.

“Hopefully we see that fight. I’m not sure if he wants to come back, Conor I’m talking about, after what’s probably going to be about a year’s lay-off and fighting Dustin for the third time.

Michael Bisping Advises McGregor to take “tune-up fight” next

You kind of want to get your whistle wet. Find your mojo, blow off that ring rust. Nate would be the guy. Then, if Conor beats Nate, then he fights Dustin, because, you know, they are going to do a fourth fight.

The fourth fight will be absolutely massive, but I think if I was Conor’s manager, if I was advising him, I would say ‘take a tune-up fight’, you know what I mean?”

Conor McGregor sustained a brutal broken leg against Dustin Poirier back in July, excluding the Irishman from competition for at least a year while he recovers. The fight was Conor McGregor’s second consecutive loss to Poirier, leading many (including Bisping) to ask whether the “Notorious”, MMA’s biggest star, still has the ability to compete at the highest level.

Although Nate Diaz is unlikely to take kindly to being labelled a “tune-up fight” – particularly considering that it was Nate Diaz who handed McGregor his first UFC loss – the fight may actually make sense for Conor.

McGregor and Diaz have faced off twice, winning one fight apiece. Two fights in the Octagon and years going by did nothing to quell their animosity, with the pair trading barbs on social media ever since.

Anything Conor McGregor does is big business for the UFC, but if he seems unlikely to fight for a title anytime soon – if ever again – a grudge match against a legacy opponent may be the way to go. Nate Diaz is still a firm fan favorite, and, like Conor McGregor, lost his two most recent fights.

Conor McGregor won’t fight again in 2021, and may well be out of action until mid-2022. His comeback, if it happens, will be a career-defining moment for the Irishman.

If Bisping’s comments didn’t inflame the Diaz-McGregor rivalry, their recent posturing online certainly inspired a response in Michael Bisping:

“I mean listen, Diaz is great, Conor’s great, they are both big stars but they’re just talking sh*t at one another. Listen, now it gets a little tiresome after a while. Either just fight or shut up.”

Do you think McGregor and Diaz’s time in the UFC is up, or do you want to see McGregor vs Diaz 3? Let us know in the comments.
