When it came to releases from WWE NXT earlier this year, Bobby Fish was a big surprise. Here was an original member of the wildly popular Undisputed Era faction who recently came back to TV following an injury. He got new theme music, and seemed keen to break out on a solo run for the first time in the history of the brand – only to be released. Adam Cole also left, leaving just Kyle O’Reilly as an original member in the company. However, while Cole ended up in AEW – Bobby Fish has chosen to go elsewhere, and will now be joining the Major League Wrestling roster.
Bobby Fish Is Ready For The Opera Cup
This news was broken by Sports Illustrated, who spoke with Fish about this coming debut. He will be showing up for their annual Opera Cup tournament, which started in 2019 and has seen Tom Lawlor & Davey Boy Smith Jr. claim wins thus far. Fish would say the following about joining MLW.
“I’m ready to jump in headfirst into MLW, especially with the Opera Cup. I welcome this new challenge. I’m in a situation now where I have extra room for creativity with what you see in the ring. That’s what I’m here to push. MLW has some very talented athletes, and I’m excited to see how we mix it up.”
Getting A Proper Chance To Be A Singles Star
This will see Fish really take the spotlight as a singles star, as even before WWE NXT he was best known for working alongside Kyle O’Reilly as a tag team specialist. However, a run as ROH TV Champion and an excellent match with Katsuyori Shibata in NJPW showed just how good he was in singles. Putting him in a roster with the likes of Davey Richards, Jacob Fatu and Alex Hammerstone should really let him shine.
This might be the best possible move for someone like Fish. With his age and injury history, WWE wouldn’t have pushed him as a singles star. His best option was to get back into a tag team with Kyle O’Reilly – but WWE isn’t the best place to be a tag team star. This will allow him to be the type of wrestler he wants to be, and potentially bring a veteran edge to MLW.
