This past Sunday evening ended with The Elite arguably stronger than ever. Sure, The Young Bucks lost the AEW World Tag Team Championships to The Lucha Bros in an excellent steel cage match, but Kenny Omega is still the AEW World Champion. He was able to overcome Christian Cage, who had previously beaten him for the Impact Wrestling World Championship. They also regained Adam Cole, which was big. However this win for Omega was just another in one of his best years to date – which has earned him the top spot in the PWI 500.
Kenny Omega Tops The PWI 500 For Second Time
Kenny Omega has been able to do this once before. This was back in 2018, when he won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and won multiple other rewards for simply being the most outstanding wrestler in the world. Now, as we are set to get the 31st issue of the PWI 500 – Kenny Omega is once again on top. He was at #13 last year.
These rankings take into play the major accomplishments of each wrestler, and that is why Omega belongs on top. He was the AEW World Champion during a large part of the observed period, and was one of the driving forces to AEW becoming perhaps the most popular organization in the industry today with hardcore fans.
His match quality has also been incredible, putting in great matches with Jon Moxley, Rey Fenix, and just about anyone he entered the ring with. He’s only taken one singles loss in the period, and largely hasn’t needed help after the bell has rung. Omega is simply the most elite wrestler today, something that even Roman Reign can’t claim – despite a similar level of dominance.
Roman Reigns Is #2
The top ten would be revealed alongside Omega setting the top spot. Roman Reigns is #2. This is a massive rise from his #14 spot last year. He is followed by Bobby Lashley who is up from #44 & Drew McIntyre who holds steady at #4. Kota Ibushi from NJPW got the #5 spot, up from #17 last year, and Jon Moxley was #6 – down from the top spot last time around.
Will Ospreay ranks in at #7 after his rise to the top of NJPW, pushing him up from #21 last year Finn Balor is #8, up from #35 last year due to an incredible NXT run. Shingo Takagi is up from #53 after winning the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. Rich Swann rounds out the top ten, making a massive leap from last years #230 ranking.
You really could make an argument for Reigns in the top spot, but AEW is simply benefiting much more from Omega as their top star – while Reigns hasn’t really moved WWE in either direction. These rankings are always a point of contention with fans, so do you agree with the top ten names? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
