We’re just a few short weeks away from the start of the NJPW G1 Climax. This tournament will put the spotlight on their heavyweight roster, as twenty men separated into two blocks will duke it out to see who gets a shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom in January. However, the Junior Heavyweights and Tag Teams will get their chance in November, as Best Of The Super Juniors and World Tag League will merge together once again.
NJPW Forced To Run Two Tournaments
This is the same format as we saw in 2020, due to the Best of The Super Juniors being pushed around by COVID-19 related shutdowns. It normally would take place in the spring ahead of Dominion, and hopefully we go back to that format next year. However, this gets eyes on the otherwise skipped World Tag League.
The tournaments haven’t had their fields revealed yet, but will run from November 13th to December 15th, with dates generally alternating between tournaments. NJPW really doesn’t have enough to fill both fields with talent from their roster, and might need to call in outside help from allies in the United States – or even just the NJPW Strong roster.
Could AEW Send Talent Over?
AEW names might be brought over, especially to fill out the tag team ranks. Evil Uno & Stu Greyson of Dark Order expressed interest, and other teams such as Varisty Blondes could benefit from this experience as well. From NJPW Strong we will likely see The Good Brothers and West Coast Wrecking Crew show up. Impact Wrestling will likely have to give FinJuice back, and ROH could build a team out of any of their factions – but Chris Dickinson & Brody King of Violence Unlimited have been in NJPW Strong.
They need less help in the Best of The Super Juniors tournament, but names like Dante Martin, Lee Johnson, Lio Rush, Jordan Clearwater, Daniel Garcia, and Josh Alexander wouldn’t be opposed in the tournament. This would mean taking names off other shows for a month, so top stars likely won’t be going, but there’s a lot to be gained by sending talented undercard names and teams.
