Queen Elizabeth II has praised British female tennis star Emma Raducanu following her remarkable victory at the US Open.
Queen Elizabeth II Praises Emma Raducanu’s US Open Victory
The 18-year-old made history by being the first qualifier to win one of the major grand slams in the current era. While that was a huge feat in and of itself, the manner in which she dispatched her opponent was equally impressive.
Emma won the final in straight sets and banished any doubts that she may crumble at the thought of pressure. And the Queen could not help but send her congratulations.
In a statement given by the Queen, she said: “I send my congratulations to you on your success in winning the United States Open Tennis Championships.
“It is a remarkable achievement at such a young age and is testament to your hard work and dedication.” The victory was also significant for other reasons.
Given that British tennis had been successful largely due to the success of men’s star Andy Murray, the nation now has a new female superstar. This will only go on to encourage others to take up the sport.
The Queen added: “I have no doubt your outstanding performance, and that of your opponent Leylah Fernandez, will inspire the next generation of tennis players.
“I send my warmest good wishes to you and your many supporters.” And those kind words resonated with Emma. She never expected to win the US Open from the outset, but her determination drove her to the title against all the odds.
That memory will stay with her forever alongside the warm words given by the Queen. In response to the statement, Emma told the BBC the following.
She remarked: “It meant everything to get a message from Her Majesty… I was extremely honoured and very, very grateful that she took notice of my tennis.
“I can’t believe it. I’m maybe going to frame that letter or something.” Time will tell whether Emma can continue to set high standards like she has just done.
Regardless of whatever happens now in her career, she has managed to create history that will be remembered long after her tennis days. Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
