Since joining the WWE, Asuka has proven to be one of the best in the business and it all started on This Day in Wrestling History when she signed with WWE NXT.
While not many fans may have known what to expect, they were soon locked as as the start of one of the most dominate careers NXT began.
Leading up to her signing, she had been a well traveled wrestler in Japan and even had her own promotion Kana Pro.
With so much to bring to the table, signing her could be considered a coup and she hasn’t disappointed despite questionable booking on the main roster.
New era
She was ready to kick off a new era after she signed with the WWE, but first she had to be introduced through a statement on WWE.com.
“WWE announced today the signing of international superstar Kanako Urai, aka Kana, to the NXT division. Kana will officially report to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Fla., in late September.
“Over the course of her 11-year career, Kana has become one of the most exciting women ever to compete in Japan. She has appeared in many organizations throughout the country and has held multiple championships. Last month, Kana made a surprise appearance at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn, sitting in the audience ringside next to WWE Hall of Famer “Nature Boy” Ric Flair.
“’We are very excited to have Kana join the NXT roster,’ said Triple H, WWE Executive Vice President of Talent, Creative and Live Events. ‘Her exciting in-ring style will make an immediate impact on the already impressive NXT women’s division.’”
Now known as Asuka, she kicked things off with an awesome introduction video before embarking on a dominate run. Within seven months of her signing, she defeated Sasha Banks for the the NXT Women’s Championship.
Her meteoric rise led to her eventually being called up to the main roster where fans have lamented that WWE Creative have misused her on a consistent basis.
To be fair, that’s been the case more often than not with NXT call ups for whatever reason.
There’s no denying This Day in Wrestling History was a great day for both Asuka and the WWE, and we hope to see many more championship runs in her future.
