WWE has finally officially announced the signing of olympic gold medalist wrestler Gable Steveson. After being brought out as a part of Summerslam, they’d do their best to get him under contract – while he was also being courted by UFC owner Dana White. However, WWE was able to get him and have big plans for him as a star – potentially even being the one to take the torch from Brock Lesnar!
Gable Steveson Could Be Already On Track To Face Brock Lesnar
As reported in this week’s edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there are already early talks of Gable Steveson when it comes to future Wrestlemania matches for him with Brock Lesnar. They want Lesnar to ‘pass the torch’ to Steveson, potentially setting him up as a mega star for the future of WWE. You could look at this like when Kurt Angle made Lesnar look like a star to set him up.
Steveson is only 21 years old, and is not reporting to the WWE Performance Center yet – as he will continue to focus on college and another NCAA Championship. His deal is known as an NIL Deal, NIL standing for name, image, and likeness. He’s going to be heading back to WWE very soon, but school comes first. This is a long term investment.
Potentially A Retirement Match?
Given that it will be a while before Steveson has a chance to become a force in the company – this could very well be the planned retirement match for Brock Lesnar. He recently came back to the company to confront Roman Reigns, and had a major confrontation in Madison Square Garden which really got fans buzzing. After some time away, his hype is back and this could be a different and more grizzled version of Lesnar than we’ve seen before.
It’s very possible he hangs around the top of the card once again, waiting for someone to properly take him down. That could be Gable Steveson, someone with the same potential and background that Lesnar had some twenty years ago. However, plans are still very early, and anything could happen.
