Meghan Markle, who is still known as Duchess of Sussex, may have the right to keep her Royal title.
Constitutional Expert Claims It May Not Be Possible To Remove Meghan Markle’s Royal Title
That is according to constitutional expert Iain MacMarthanne. The calls for Meghan to have her title stripped began to reverberate in response to a letter she had written to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, which advocated paid leave for all new parents.
But given that she has left the Royal family, some felt that she was overstepping the mark by interfering in US politics. Republican Congressman Jason Smith responded by demanding that the Royals remove Meghan’s title.
And yet, such a move may be harder than first thought. In fact, it might not even be possible given that her title is symbolic rather than a legal rule.
In an interview with the Express, Ian said: “Like all conventions, there is much flexibility…The further away any royal is from succeeding to the crown, the greater the latitude given.”
As such, Meghan’s departure from the Royal family has left her title as only having a symbolic function. Therefore, unless Meghan has broken any legal ruling, there would be no grounds for having that title removed.
If people chose to not address her by it, then it would be an individual choice. However, there is no stopping Meghan from what she could do.
Ian added: “In the instance of the Duchess of Sussex, no laws have been broken, conventions are there to be tested, but above all else, suggestions that the Duchess could be stripped of her title is to assume it was given to her.
“This is not the case.” And by being married to Prince Harry, Meghan has the right to be recognised in this manner. After all, no one is going to remove the title from Harry anytime soon.
In any event, even if they were to do so, it would take a brave person to do it. That is why Meghan is on safe ground. Ian continued: “The Duchess holds her styles and titles as a courtesy, derived from her husband. In effect, there is nothing to strip from her.”
