Could Goldberg Have Thrived in WWE’s Attitude Era

Originally, this was going to be about Goldberg’s two WWE runs but instead, let’s look at a hypothetical. Could Goldberg had worked in WWE during the hottest point of the Attitude Era?

This isn’t looking at the 2000-2001 period but 1998-1999. Was there somewhere Goldberg could’ve fit in during this time? Whenever you look at a hypothetical in wrestling like this, you have to look at a roster at that time.

    The Early Attitude Era

While WWE had a sizable roster in the late 90s, it wasn’t as bulky as WCW’s roster. Actually, the Attitude Era roster was probably WWE’s most manageable roster. I’ve never looked at WWE during this period and thought “They need a brand split”.

At different points during the Era, the number of main eventers varied. You had Austin, The Undertaker, Mankind, The Rock, Triple H, and a floater in Kane. Shawn Michaels would be around for a moment before his hiatus.

Later, Chris Jericho, The Big Show, and Kurt Angle would join their ranks. The top of the roster was made sense and you could see that some of those stars could possibly go on to other things whether it was Hollywood, retirement, or whatever in the early 2000s.

Those remaining in the main event were mainly the guys who joined WWE at the start or towards the end of the Attitude Era. They would be around for some time longer and had their runs at the top of the company extended with the brand split.

The specifics aside, there was room for the next wave of main eventers to come in as few wrestlers who cemented in place outside of Triple H and The Undertaker.  So, where does Goldberg fit in?

    Goldberg’s Place in the Era

This is a hard one because Goldberg never really seemed like a fit for WWE. In WWE, main eventers lose.

Some might plow through everything but defeat is certain, it will be significant, and the match that comes with it will be memorable—sometimes for the right reasons.

I don’t see Goldberg actually fitting into the Attitude Era at all. Hell, he didn’t even fit in post-Attitude.

If we’re being honest, it’s kind of weird to see him around in WWE now. He just always seems like an odd challenger or choice for a challenge in today’s WWE.
