Bill Goldberg has come out and spoken about how wrestling has not been the same since the absence of fans. This has had a negative impact on motivation and overall performance levels.
Bill Goldberg Laments The Current Absence Of Fans Due To Covid
In an interview with the Telegraph Herald, Bill revealed how it has been difficult to get into the role without the crowds. He said: “It’s very difficult, but character-wise, I’m just focused in on who I’m wrestling. (Hulk) Hogan taught me years and years ago that facial expressions and looking to the crowd is as just as important, if not more important, than the actual match itself.”
Nevertheless, Bill has vowed that he will still give it his all as respect for the art: “When you take that out of it, for a guy such as myself who does limited things in the ring, it kind of makes it more difficult. But I go out and do my thing, do what’s asked of me, and I’m honoured and privileged to still be a part of it and represent WWE.”
It is true that fans do make a difference, but Bill has not always had the best of relationships with them. This was partly due to many fans believing that Bill had not paid his dues. His career became huge overnight, and as such, he never had an organic fanbase that others have cultivated.
In an interview with SK Wrestling, Eric Bischoff said: “Bill Goldberg became a megastar almost overnight. And, as a result of that, Bill Goldberg was thrust into the limelight in main event matches with top-level talent, without really having the experience that would enable him to have longer, more dramatic types of matches that you would see out of a Sting.”
Added to that, Bill did not have the x-factor that other big-name wrestlers have had. He continued: “I think there’s some resentment in the eyes of fans for that. They understand the character, how powerful the character is, but because of the limitations that he has in terms of what he can do in the ring, I think there’s a little bit of resentment or resistance to Bill Goldberg.”
