Once again we are here for some action from the G1 Climax. Tonight was B-Block action once again, which is really the Jeff Cobb & Kazuchika Okada block. Both of those men look to maintain their winning streaks into their clash on the final night, but names like EVIL are lurking in the shadows to try to stop that from happening.
YOSHI-HASHI & Hirooki Goto Should Have Clashed Earlier
Starting off the show was a battle between El Desperado and Young Lion Kosei Fujita. Maybe if Oiwa & Fujita got someone like Desperado in a two on one match, they’d have a chance – but despite a strong effort and some good grappling, Fujita was easily beaten by Desperado. Desperado is enjoying getting these reps in with Best of The Super Juniors coming up fast on the NJPW Calendar.
First bit of tournament action of the night came with YOSHI-HASHI taking on Tama Tonga. Neither man has a chance of making the finals, but wins and strong performances still matter – as they will help you get into the tournament next year. Both men brought a strong performance here, showing they’re equally matched in a hard fought match. GunStun was the best blow Tama had, but YOSHI-HASHI had it scouted and blocked every time before hitting Karma for the win.
Hirooki Goto & Chase Owens both got their first wins on Night 10 of the G1 Climax, with Owens getting the shock of the tournament when he beat Hiroshi Tanahashi clean in the middle of the ring. However, Goto wouldn’t let the same happen to him. His last match with YOSHI-HASHI has his fighting spirit blazing out of control. If they clashed earlier, Goto might be in the running, but a win over Owens here bodes well for his chances of making next year’s field of 20.
EVIL Overcomes Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada Brings Out The Best In Taichi
After the intermission, Jeff Cobb would get a chance to victimize SANADA. Cobb is done with the easier matches, and is facing men who have a serious chance of beating him, with SANADA really bringing the fight tonight. The answer to beating Cobb seems to be taking him into deep waters and avoiding the Tour of The Islands. SANADA would counter a few times and try to stretch this one out, but was overwhelmed and slammed into the mat for the three count. That’s 6 in a row for Cobb.
In a battle of Light & Dark, Tanahashi would take on EVIL. Historically, Tanahashi is the one who wins matches in this case, but House of Torture is making EVIL more dangerous than ever. In a straight up fight, Tanahashi wins almost every time – but Dick Togo made sure that was not the case. Tanahashi fought valiantly, but in the end he’d be hit with his United States Championship – and slammed down with the STO for a deflating win. The crowd was behind Tanahashi 100%, and depressed to see him fall.
Main event time, and once again Kazuchika Okada takes the spotlight. Since bringing The Rainmaker back as his default finisher in this tournament, he’s truly been the Okada of old, and Taichi was ready for that. He’d hit a DDT onto exposed floor to really halt Okada early on, and bring the AJPW style offense with the hard drivers and kicks. Like most Okada matches, this one started slow but by the end was an absolute epic – and Taichi fell to the Rainmaker. This makes Okada also 6-0, neck and neck with Jeff Cobb.
Whose Block Is It Anyways?
After tonight’s matches, the scoreboard in the B-Block looks like this.
Jeff Cobb, Kazuchika Okada – 12 Points
EVIL – 8 points
Hiroshi Tanahashi – 6 points
Taichi, SANADA, Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI – 4
Tama Tonga, Chase Owens – 2
Everyone below 6 points is out of the race, and Tanahashi relies on a four way tie with a win over Cobb being his only way to the finals. Who will win the B-Block? Will EVIL catch up to Cobb & Okada? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
