Right now, the fate of Ring of Honor is very much in the air. They are doing a set of TV tapings and their Final Battle PPV to close out 2021 – but then taking the first quarter of 2022 off. No TV tapings, and any contracts that are good through the end of 2021 will be done at the end of March 2022. There might be no more contracted wrestlers in ROH after that point, as they could go back to running things like a super indy.
Ring Of Honor To Go Back To Their Roots?
Back in the day, Ring of Honor was considered to be the top independent wrestling company in the game. They had all the top stars showing up frequently, names like Samoa Joe, CM Punk, Bryan Danielson and more. It was the best wrestling you could find, but now places like All Elite Wrestling and Game Changer Wrestling fill that niche in the wrestling world.
Meanwhile, ROH would be running a dedicated roster and direction that would see them feeling more like WWE-lite or Impact Wrestling. They still had some fantastic wrestlers, with names like Matt Taven, Jay Lethal, Jonathan Gresham, Bandido, and Brody King on their roster. However, odd time slots on Sinclair affiliate stations made the weekly show hard to catch, and a reliance on bringing in talent from NJPW made their shows hard to draw in fans without them on the events.
Now, as per Dave Meltzer on the Wrestling Observer Radio – they could be looking to go back to the old way. Having their constant names come in, but without contracts. Just bringing in other major indie names to fill out cards, and try to give fans some excellent wrestling along the way. This could work better for them, and Meltzer also noted that archive footage will be used to fill the gap between Final Battle and their TV tapings closing out – meaning technically things won’t stop as far as fans are concerned.
