After 80 weeks, NXT UK finally has their fans back. Granted, it’s only about 30 socially distanced fans in the BT Sports studios, but the energy is back all the same. They would get a treat tonight, as Ilja Dragunov defended the NXT UK Championship in the main event.
Blair Davenport Is Reinstated – Starts To Tear Through The Division
However, we’d kick action off with the women’s division. Blair Davenport (formerly known as Bea Priestley) has been suspended for her beatdowns backstage. However, those are what made Stevie Turner want this match – and demand she be reinstated. This one kicked off fast and furious, really getting the crowd going in a big way.
Davenport had early control, but a triple neckbreaker got Turner a two count. She’d miss a big boot and take a superkick from Davenport. Turned nailed the Mass Effect for a two count, but spent too much time trash talking – and took a big knee strike and Falcon Arrow for the loss.
Elsewhere, Jinny got the news that Meiko Satomura will defend her championship against her in three weeks. Flash Morgan Webster had set up a fight with Sha Samuels by slapping him across the face last week – and regretted it tonight. He’d try to chop down his bigger opponent, but was physically overwhelmed and fell quickly to a spinebuster as he tried for a DDT.
Ilja Dragunov Will Not Give This Championship Up
Ending the reign of WALTER was no small task, but Ilja Dragunov managed this at NXT Takeover 36. Now, he needs to defend it, and the first challenger was A-Kid, who won a triple threat to get here. He’s a good match for Dragunov, similar in speed and size, but with better submissions – while Dragunov hits harder.
They wasted no time, and got right into the action. Dragunov went for the leg of A-Kid, and had his arm attacked in kind. They seemed to have answers for every bit of offense thrown, and it became clear this one would enter some deep waters. Minutes passed, and both men started to accumulate more and more damage.
Submissions were attempted and broken, strikes were thrown with hurt limbs. It was pro wrestling at it’s finest, and they never left the ring once. A-Kid took some aggressive elbows to the head, but applied a tight sleeper and nearly had Dragunov pass out. He’d be sent off, but got a triangle choke. Dragunov powerbombed his way free, hit a Torpedo Moscow to the knee, then the face for the win.
