If WWE loves anything, it’s milking nostalgia for a quick pop in ratings. We’ve seen this done commonly, with advertising a legend like The Undertaker, Stone Cold, or The Rock – all to draw in fans who fondly remember the Attitude Era. Less commonly we will see them do entire throwback episodes of Smackdown or RAW, but another Retro RAW is incoming very soon.
Retro RAW Incoming For January
This news was first shared by Andrew Zarian of The Mat Men Podcast, who has built up a solid track record as of late. The next episode of Retro RAW will be expected to arrive around January, allowing WWE to bridge the gap between WWE: Day One and the Royal Rumble later in the month.
It’s unclear what era they will harken back to this time around, but last time they did a throwback Smackdown? They went back to the Ruthless Aggression era, even bringing in a giant CGI fist. The Ruthless Aggression era is a bit easier to use at this point, as they have more of the talent still around.
Most Fans Want To See New Names
This isn’t a horrible idea, but initial feedback is less than impressive. You might see a slight boost from folks who see an ad and tune in hoping to see one of their favorites. However, fans want to see WWE using the talent they have – not the talent they had a decade ago.
Over relying on bringing in nostalgic names like the nWo, running another DX reunion, or carting out Sgt. Slaughter for the hundredth time? It doesn’t help WWE in the long term. WWE has even used older talents to push down up and coming names, with the worst example being the horrible burial of The Ascension.
WWE needs to focus on building up new names, and using the names to the past to boost them would be great. However given the past – that doesn’t seem likely. How do you feel about the prospect of a Retro RAW? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
