Earlier today at NJPW Power Struggle, we saw a new IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion crowned. KENTA was able to use his crafty nature and signature finisher of the Go To Sleep to claim the victory and the belt that he has yearned after since 2020. However, he has wasted zero time in making a major challenge – wanting to face CM Punk sometime soon.
KENTA Is Ready To Put CM Punk To Sleep
Talking with Tokyo Sports, KENTA would have the following to say. Translation was handled by Google Translate, finding the following clear statement.
“It may be tough in reality, but I always want to entertain my fans … so I hope … Oh, CM Punk! I’m always ready to put you to sleep.”
This is likely going to stem from the fact that CM Punk started to use the Go To Sleep finish in the United States, which is how many western fans were introduced to the fireman’s carry into knee strike finish that Punk still uses to this day in All Elite Wrestling.
Another First Time Matchup For Fans To Look Forward Too
There really has never been a great chance to pay this potential rivalry off until now, as by the time Punk started using the Go To Sleep finisher – he was in WWE. Ring of Honor & Pro Wrestling NOAH worked together in the mid 2000’s, with KENTA showing up many times, but paths never had a reason to cross.
When KENTA arrived in WWE, Punk was on his way out, and then retired for seven years before his AEW return. Even when KENTA was on AEW programming, Punk was still just something fans dreamed of seeing in the growing promotion. Much like the current angle between CM Punk & Eddie Kingston, this would lead to a first time ever matchup.
Punk has pulled so much of his style from wrestlers like KENTA and Hiroyoshi Tenzan, and that alone is something to build an angle from. Everything that made him good and special was far from unique, and no one knows this better than KENTA. Add in the shades of a heel persona Punk has been showing recently, and this could well be the straw that breaks that camels back.
Do you think we will see KENTA vs. CM Punk in 2022? Would you want to see this in AEW at Battle Of The Belts or NJPW for Wrestle Kingdom? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
