It’s time for another installment of Best of The Super Juniors. Tonight’s card might as well be the finals, as we get to see one of the most intense rivalries in NJPW explode with the main event. Hiromu Takahashi & El Desperado will run back the 2020 BoSJ finals, and that’s something that is special. However, five matches precede that match – so who earned their points tonight?
Kanemaru, Ishimori & SHO Keep Their Leads Intact
After ten minutes of intense grappling from the young lions, Yoshinobu Kanemaru would take the fight to fellow Suzuki-Gun member DOUKI. We’d see some tough love in a short and sweet brawl of a match, with DOUKI getting some close calls before being dropped hard with a brainbuster for the three count.
Next up was Taiji Ishimori & Master Wato, who displayed some lovely counter wrestling in the early goings. Ishimori is an incredible wrestler, and Wato gets better by the day. A La Mistica into Omoplata would prove impossible to escape for Wato, getting Ishimori the win.
Ryusuke Taguchi would show up against YOH in a big way. He’d get his comedy out of the way quick, before crushing YOH with Dodon for the win. YOH has yet to show much of anything in this tournament, but got a few close calls in this one. Maybe next time. Speaking of YOH, SHO would be in the next one – taking out BUSHI with a wrench and Triangle Choke. Average match, he didn’t need Dick Togo this time at least.
Robbie Eagles & ELP Would Have Stolen Any Other Show
One of the bigger matches on the card came with El Phantasmo and Robbie Eagles. Heavy blows were as common as the trash talk once this one got moving in the right direction, and ELP would slow the pace down and torture Eagles with hard stomps and backbreakers. Eagles fought back and went after the knee, setting up the Ron Miller Special – but ELP got the ropes.
ELP nailed a backdrop, and got a poison rana in return. Eagles went to fly, but got shot down on the top rope and sent to the middle of the ring with a frankensteiner. Massive Wrist Clutch Burning Hammer somehow wasn’t enough, and Eagles would block the CRII into a pin for the win. Great match – but this show was pre-stolen.
Hiromu Takahashi & El Desperado Go To War Once Again
The crowd popped just for the graphic with the main event – and Hiromu & Desperado wasted zero time getting right into the action with heavy chops. These two hate yet respect each other, and they bring out the worst in each other. A massive shotgun dropkick sent Desperado into the corner, but he’d come back with a focused attack on the leg of Hiromu. He’d slam it with a chair on the ramp, but Hiromu crawled back to the ring.
Hiromu would beat feeling into his leg and nail a dropkick off the apron, but the damage was adding up. Desperado applied Numero Dos in the ring, but Hiromu fought free and set up the Sunset Flip Apron Bomb – but the leg gave out. Hiromu got the worst off a dangerous cannonball senton from Desperado.
Back in the ring, he’d manage to slap on a triangle sleeper, but nearly got thrown out of the ring with the powerbomb counter. Hiromu would keep the high ground and nail the Sunset Flip Apron Bomb, and nearly got a countout win as we passed the 25 minute mark. Crowd was at a fever pitch as these two flirted with a time limit draw.
Desperado locks in Numero Dos but Hiromu doesn’t know when to quit, and Despy turns it into a powerbomb. Hiromu nails Victory Royale and sets up Time Bomb, and Desperado counters into a crucifix pin as the clock hits 30. Time limit draw, fans everywhere need their next one to have 60 minutes.
SHO Still Leads The Pack
The draw in the main event keeps things interesting, putting two men on odd numbers. The rankings are as followed.
SHO – 8 points
Yoshinobu Kanemaru, Taiji Ishimori – 6 points
Hiromu Takahashi – 5 points
Robbie Eagles, BUSHI, DOUKI, Master Wato – 4 points
El Desperado – 3 points
El Phantasmo – 2 points
YOH – 0 points
