Right now in AEW, there is a fair bit of crossover between them and the UFC. Dan Lambert has taken his fighters from American Top Team around for a program with Chris Jericho & The Inner Circle. This has led to names like Junior Dos Santos and Jorge Masvidal showing up on AEW programming, giving some major cross-promotional advertising for UFC. However, we can not expect to see one UFC fighter in AEW anytime soon, that being the always outspoken Colby Covington.
Colby Covington Trashes American Top Team And AEW
Following his recent fight with Kamaru Usman for the UFC Welterweight Championship, which Covington would lose, there was a press conference. There he would speak about his thoughts on his old fight team of American Top Team and AEW. The following quote makes it clear that Covington will not be anywhere near AEW anytime soon, with him saying the following.
“I don’t pay any attention to what those losers do. I’m focused on putting on the biggest and best fights in the world. You might see me in WWE one day, but I don’t think you’re going to see me in a second-tier promotion, like AEW.”
Important To Remember He Previously Showed Up In Impact Wrestling
This is just more trash talking from Covington following his leaving ATT for MMA Masters in 2020. Alongside American Top Team, Covington has previously appeared in Impact Wrestling in 2018, so he might need to watch what he says about working second tier promotions.
As for him showing up in WWE, you never know what could happen when it comes to them and MMA fighters. They last brought in Cain Velasquez to fight Brock Lesnar, and had Chuck Lidell & Tito Ortiz spotted around the Performance Center. However, Ortiz & Liddell never showed up beyond working out at the PC, and Velasquez has been released. Given his trash talking skills however, Covington might fit in perfectly for a quick WWE angle.
