With Kamaru Usman set to rematch Colby Covington at UFC 268 this weekend, we’ve seen a lot of trash talk from the challenger. Kamaru Usman, sitting atop the welterweight division without a single UFC loss to his name, claims he isn’t threatened by Colby Covington, and believes that the last time they fought “destroyed” Colby.
The welterweight champ took to Instagram to trash Covington and his mindset leading up to the UFC 268 main card.
“His loss to me has, I think, destroyed him. There’s just some athletes that are just gonna have to live with knowing that in the time where you existed someone else existed that was better than you.
Kamaru Usman Says Losing to Him “Destroyed” Colby Covington
And I think that’s something he’s gonna have to live with, and I think it might eat at him for the rest of his life.” Kamaru Usman dispatched Colby Covington late in the fifth round of their last fight. The first four rounds were a back-and-forth affair, with no clear winner emerging from the first twenty minutes of the fight.
Colby Covington’s legendary cardio was serving him well, with the pair exchanging devastating blows. Ultimately, Usman grounded Covington twice with vicious strikes to the head, with Colby covering up the second time and enduring Usman’s punishing ground-and-pound game. Referee Marc Goddard called a stop to the fight, Usman stayed champion, and Colby Covington left to recover.
Since then, Covington defeated Tyron Woodley, the very man who Kamaru Usman won his title from, via TKO. Usman has defended his belt three times, against Gilbert Burns once and Jorge Masvidal twice. In Usman’s last fight, he handed Masvidal his first career knockout loss, and this development in his game is not lost on the champ.
“I’m confident in the growth that I have made in my career. I’m confident in the growth that I have made in my style. I’m confident in the growth that I have made in my work, to where I think he’s going to understand that it’s a different level.
I expect the rematch to be whatever I make it. If I feel like I wanna be systematic and dissect him and get him out of there early, I will do that.
But if I feel like getting in a scrap, I might do that as well.” Whichever way this goes down, Usman vs Covington 2 will surely be one of the fights of the year. Do you think Kamaru Usman is right about Colby Covington? Let us know in the comments.
